Casa Salsa has opened up a restaurant in Waterloo.
This is good news for folks in Waterloo Region who want something a little more authentic than Taco Bell. The region doesn’t have a whole lot of Mexican options. Ethel’s Lounge has a few decent Tex Mex menu items, but except on Cinco de Mayo, it’s not the focus of the restaurant. The Mayan Grill was a brief, bright light while it was open in its Cambridge location. Cambridge was always a bit too far away for me to become a regular, mind you.
I was going to give Casa Salsa a try on the weekend, but they were closed when I made it down there. Reviews on kw.eats, however, have been pretty positive. They also have a booth in Your Kitchener Market. They’re both targeted at the take out, lunch crowd market. I’d still like to see a proper sit-down Mexican place with some nice atmosphere, but I’m certainly going to give them a try the next time I’m looking for lunch around UW.
Erin and I ate there this evening. The ambiance is non-existent; as you say, they cater more to the lunch take-out crowd. Their quarters are cramped and tend to get a little cold when the front door opens, and the traffic can prove distracting. However, it was worth noting that the place was crowded for supper, with a steady stream of people going in and out.
We ordered Casadias and Furtadas and made ours a combo grande, which gave us two drinks and four sides. The guacamole was good and clearly made fresh, and the refried black beans, the Mexican rice and the pico were good as well. It’s not the Mayan Grill, but the food was well made, pretty plentiful and cheap.
Well, I still haven’t gone. Apparently they’re closed on weekends to train staff or something, so I probably won’t get to try them out for a while…
Good to know they have some promise.

That’s too bad. I was able to make it to the Waterloo location a few times. While I can’t say it was my greatest Mexican dining experience ever, it sated my occasional burrito cravings. I’m sad to see it go.
